Gun Control

With the rise of fatal shootings in public places like schools and shopping malls, the question of gun control has taken center stage. These questions are of pressing concern for young people in particular, in the wake of the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and other school shootings. Gun safety advocates call for greater regulation on gun sales and ownership, including more extensive background checks, waiting periods, and limitations on type of weapons. They believe these are the only way to prevent deadly attacks and save lives. Gun advocates such as the National Rifle Association insist that greater control of guns is an infringement on Americans’ rights and a violation of the Second Amendment, which should protect responsible gun owners. How do we sift through the arguments in order to find the best way ensure safe communities? Which voices should we prioritize, and what data is most reliable?
