It is not always easy to understand or even identify the ethical dimensions of important public issues. We may feel we do not have enough information to make judgments, or that all sides are valid, or that the issue is so complex that it resists analysis. However, understanding and assessing the ethical dimensions of contemporary issues is necessary for our lives as professionals, community members, and global citizens. Ethical reflection involves reasoned perspective on our purposes, values, and actions and also those of the communities to which we belong. Reflection on moral problems draws on resources from philosophical and religious traditions, different communities and institutions, and the personal and collective experiences of each individual. Through classes and other activities, we seek to help students and others learn to think critically about ethics and to develop positions and arguments on issues they care about. Our project will address a wide range of specific issues, united by our attention to our responsibilities as professionals, citizens, and community members and the ways individual choices and actions affect the various communities to which we belong.
